Ancient Chinese Medicine Offers Hope to Infertile Couples
More than six million women in the U.S. suffer from an impaired ability to have children, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. For many, traditional Western medicine techniques prove unsuccessful. “For these women, there is still hope, as acupuncture and herbs are succeeding where other treatments have failed,” says Mike Berkley, a graduate of the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. Berkley, a licensed acupuncturist and board certified in Clinical Chinese Herbal Medicine, has developed a practice devoted exclusively to treating infertility with ancient Chinese medicine. Berkley chose his career focus after a patient burst into tears in his office. “She’d been unable to conceive and I’d been treating her for three months. She saw the startled look on my face and started laughing as she told me she was pregnant!” Berkley said that’s when he decided to devote his energies to helping couples have children. He founded The New York Center for Acupuncture and Complementary Medicine which provides holistic treatment for women's health issues including infertility, menopause, and endometriosis. It also specializes in alternative medical solutions for male infertility. “We use a holistic approach incorporating acupuncture, herbs, and nutrition and life-style counseling,” says Berkley. “It’s hardly radical. It’s thousands of years old. I’d say it’s passed the test of time!”
